CSOC or BCSS: Which Construction Safety Course Do You Need?
Short answer: CSOC is for workers who do manual work on construction sites. BCSS is for people who supervise work on construction sites. MOM exempts workers who have completed the supervisor course from the safety orientation course for the same industry.
CSOC: for construction workers
The WSQ course Apply Workplace Safety and Health in Construction Sites (formerly the Construction Safety Orientation Course, CSOC) is listed by MOM for employees who carry out manual work in building and engineering construction worksites, under regulation 9(1) of the WSH (Construction) Regulations 2007.
- Renewal: MOM requires safety orientation course certification to be renewed once every 2 years for workers with 6 years or less in the industry, and once every 4 years for those with more than 6 years. Renew with the CSOC Recertification course.
- At THT Academy: 2 days (18 hours) at Woodlands Spectrum 1.
BCSS: for construction supervisors
The WSQ course Workplace Safety and Health Management in Construction Industry (BCSS), formerly the Building Construction Supervisors Safety Course, is listed by MOM for employees who supervise work in building and engineering construction worksites, under regulation 9(2) of the WSH (Construction) Regulations 2007.
- Who it suits: site supervisors, foremen, clerks-of-work, site engineers and WSH coordinators.
- At THT Academy: 4 days (32 hours) at Woodlands Spectrum 1.
Do supervisors also need CSOC?
MOM states that workers who have completed the construction supervisor course are exempted from the construction safety orientation course. If a worker is not in the construction industry and took BCSS only for upgrading, MOM says they only need the safety orientation course for the industry they work in.
