Overhead Crane Training in Singapore: What the Law Requires and What the Course Covers

Short answer: Yes, you need training to operate an overhead crane in Singapore. The WSH (General Provisions) Regulations require a lifting machine, such as a crane, to be operated only by a person who is trained and competent to operate it, or by a trainee under the direct supervision of a qualified person. THT Academy runs a 1-day Overhead Crane Operation Course at Woodlands, and can also train your workers on-site on your own cranes.

Who needs overhead crane training

Anyone who operates an overhead crane at work, for example in a factory, warehouse, workshop or shipyard. Employers should make sure each operator is trained and competent on the crane they use before they operate it alone.

What the Overhead Crane Operation Course covers

  • The WSH Act and the regulations on lifting equipment
  • The legal requirements for lifting operations
  • Risk assessment, including pre- and post-operation checks and checking that the work area is safe
  • The roles and responsibilities of a rigger
  • Safe slinging and rigging
  • A slinging and lifting practical session
  • A theory assessment and an individual practical assessment

Keeping overhead cranes safe

  • Trained operators only: only trained and competent people, or trainees under the direct supervision of a qualified person, should operate the crane.
  • Regular examination: MOM requires lifting equipment to be examined at regular intervals by an Authorised Examiner, as set out in the WSH (General Provisions) Regulations.
  • Checks before and after use: operators check the crane, controls and lifting gear before work, and report any defects.
  • Rigging: loads should be slung by someone who knows safe rigging. Many operators also take WSQ Perform Rigger and Signalman Tasks.
