Scissor Lift and Boom Lift Training in Singapore: What MOM Requires

Short answer: Yes. In Singapore, anyone who operates a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), such as a scissor lift, boom lift or vertical personnel platform, must first pass a MOM-accredited training course for that type of MEWP. One course does not cover all three.

What MOM requires

MOM lists three WSQ courses under regulation 21(12) of the WSH (General Provisions) Regulations, each for employees who operate that type of equipment:

  • WSQ Operate Scissor Lift
  • WSQ Operate Boom Lift
  • WSQ Operate Vertical Personnel Platform

MOM’s circular on MEWP safety states that operators must attend and pass a MEWP training course conducted by a MOM Accredited Training Provider, and that the course must be specific to the type of MEWP they operate, for example a boom lift, scissor lift or vertical personnel platform.

Which course do you need?

If your workers use more than one type, they need the course for each type.

Training on the specific machine

The same MOM circular also states that familiarisation training shall be given to the operator by a competent person who is trained and competent in that model of MEWP. This is in addition to the accredited course.
