How to Become a Lifting Supervisor in Singapore: Requirements and Course
Short answer: before any lifting operation using a crane, the responsible person must appoint a lifting supervisor. That person must have completed a training course acceptable to MOM and have at least 1 year of relevant lifting experience before the appointment.
What the law requires
Under the WSH (Operation of Cranes) Regulations 2011, a lifting supervisor must be appointed before any lifting operation involving a crane is carried out at a workplace. MOM lists the WSQ course Supervise Safe Lifting Operations (formerly the Lifting Supervisor Safety Course) under regulation 17(2)(a) for employees appointed as lifting supervisors.
What a lifting supervisor does
- Coordinates all lifting activities.
- Supervises mobile and tower crane lifts according to the lifting plan.
- Makes sure only registered crane operators and appointed riggers and signalmen take part.
- Checks that ground conditions are safe for mobile crane lifts.
- Briefs the crane operator, riggers and signalmen on the lifting plan, and acts on any unsafe conditions reported.
